Beat the Heat! Round-the-world drinks that keep you cool
Here at Contiki headquarters, we’ve been battling the heat! We’ve been reaching for some icy cold drinks to keep our temps down – including running to the nearby Starbucks for a good jolt of caffeine! Yet as you travel, you may not have your tried-and-true watering hole readily available and you’re looking for something to quench your thirst. Never fear! Here are 5 refreshing drinks to try when you’re traveling abroad… and be sure to let us know if you tried any of these!
Young Coconut Juice
In Southeast Asian countries like Thailand, travelers can drink coconut juice/water (not to be confused with coconut milk!) directly from a young coconut. You may see vendors selling coconuts in either white or green (pictured right), hacking off the tops with a big knife and inserting a straw for you to drink. It is a natural source of electrolytes and is very refreshing on those hot summer days!
Ca Phe Sua Da (Vietnamese Iced Coffee)
Need a caffeine fix that cools you down? Why not try a Vietnamese iced coffee, which is slow-dripped into an espresso cup filled with condensed milk, and then poured over ice?
With a tropical climate, travelers looking for a coffee fix that doesn’t amp up their internal temperature will turn to this concoction – it’s also very strong coffee so be prepared for a wake up call!
When traveling in Mexico, take advantage of the agua frescas, the refreshing drink that comes in a variety of flavors, including the popular tamarind flavor, hibiscus, or the most recognizable horchata, a rice and cinnamon flavored drink. We really like the strawberry agua fresca on a hot summer day – we’re sure you’ll love it too! In fact, we had some agua frescas served here at Contiki during our Cinco de Mayo celebration!
In Italy, limoncello is traditionally served chilled and either before dinner as a palate cleanser or after dinner to aid digestion, but is popular in many mixed drinks. The Italians call it “sunshine wine” which results from steeping lemon rinds and sugar in alcohol for over a month. It is perfect touch to those hot sunny days when you’re traveling through Italy and want more than just gelato.
Many countries have their own variations of tea and coffee drinks, but no one knew that adding tapioca pearls to a drink would make it so refreshing and fun to drink. Referred to as “bubble tea” or “pearl tea” in many countries around the world, boba originated in Taiwan in the 1980′s and is readily available in many Asian countries, containing small chewy balls made of tapioca starch and requiring a giant straw to drink out of. Boba isn’t limited to just milk tea either. You can get the tapioca pearls in blended smoothies and fruit drinks as well.
