LONDON. 6 letters, unlimited opportunities for a good time. It’s one of the most famous cities in the world, and with good reason! Here’s the quick and dirty on things you need to do and see in London:

Arriving: When you get into London, check out the Contiki Basement – consider this your London launch pad. It’s the downstairs of the Royal National Hotel, and the meeting point for all Contiki trips starting in London. We have awesome staff on site who are full of travel resources to get you around town and find the best places to go. It’s a great spot to hang out in, meet people from your trip, and store your luggage – plus it’s been recently revamped with flatscreens, a pool table, and a snack bar!

Seeing: The list of sites to spot in London could make this blog post terrifyingly long. For brevity’s sake, here are a few heavy hitters:

  • The Tower of London: The oldest part of the city, the tower is basically a medieval castle right in the center of London; filled with all kinds of cool historical stuff like suits of armor and the Crown Jewels of England

  • Big Ben (the world’s largest four-faced chiming clock) and the Houses of Parliament

  • Covent Garden - Surprise! It’s not a garden but filled with fantastic shops, restaurants, and pubs.

  • The London Eye: The best seat in the house – literally! It’s the world’s biggest observational wheel with glass pods that give you uninterrupted views of the entire city

  • Trafalgar Square: Fun square with fountains, shops, and street performers

  • The West End: contains many of the cities attractions, like galleries, shops and restaurants; and it is known for the theater district – many Contiki trips in London offer entrance to a famous West End musical

  • Buckingham Palace: See what the Royal Family calls home and the changing of the guards. Trust us, they really never move

  • Westminster Abbey: The traditional spot for the Coronations of British monarchs and burials of many kings & queens

  • British Museum: One of the best museums in the world. Home to an incredible Egyptian collection, the Rosetta Stone and Parthenon Marbles among tons of other super famous and fascinating stuff.

  • Cool Bridges: Tower Bridge, London Bridge, Millennium Bridge, Waterloo Bridge, Westminster Bridge, there are TONS!

Moving: The London Underground , or the Tube, is the main form of public transportation and one of the best ways to get around the city, especially from Heathrow airport. Just FYI – “mind the gap” basically means “watch out for the distance between the rails and the platform” so you don’t get electrocuted!

Munching: while the English are not traditionally known for their cuisine, the last decade has brought on dramatic improvement and London is now home to some of the finest restaurants in the world. Thanks, Gordon Ramsay! A few of the highlights include authentic fish & chips with mushy peas, toad in the hole, and Yorkshire pudding. Don’t pass up the opportunity to enjoy a nice cup of English tea – afternoon tea is no joke across the pond.

Sipping: Just to make sure you cover all of your cultural bases, you should know that going to the pub for a pint of beer is a tradition deeply ingrained in the culture. Seriously, it’s important. London has some of the best pubs and clubs in the world, from low-key spots to all-night ragers and there is always something for everyone with London nightlife.

Spending: For range, choice and price, it’s hard to go past London’s legendary Oxford Street. It’s 1.5 miles long, filled with all kinds of stores on each side – so yes, go ahead and call it a workout too. Bonus! Portobello Road in the Notting Hill area  is not to be missed on Saturdays for hardcore antiquing. Of course, the crème de la crème of shopping in London is Harrods -  with a literal translation of “the department store of department stores”. Pick up a world-famous Harrods bag, enjoy the simply delectable food court, check out the super classy merchandise or just enjoy the vibe in the store that has it all – including a dress code!

Now that you’re pumped up on London, check out our Contiki trips that take you there. Go Contiki and leave the boring planning stuff to us.

No need to enroll in French, Italian, German and Spanish classes for your trip to Europe! You’ll have a personal guidebook in your Tour Manager. He/she will fill you in on how to say crucial phrases in the native tognue of each of the countries you visit.  Not only is it totally useful, it helps you get around and not look like a complete a-hole when you’re traveling.

By the way, English is widely spoken and sometimes understood as a second or third language among many Western Europeans, particularly those of the younger generations.

Optional Excursions – What They’re All About
01/21/2010, 10:17 am

We have included a great deal of excursions and sightseeing included all our tours, but we know everyone is different. That’s why on a Contiki, you’ll have the choice to personalize your trip during your free time. There are many activities to suit your personal travel style, whether you are looking for culture or a bit of adventure!

Decide for yourself whether to participate in certain activities and excursions. You can choose to go to a Parisian Cabaret, a Gondola ride in Venice, or more adventurous activities such as whitewater rafting in Austria, hot air ballooning in Arizona, Scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef or bungee jumping in Queenstown New Zealand.

From our experience as well as from the feedback and experiences of past clients, we know which optionals have proven most popular with our clients and that’s what we will offer with our tours.

These optionals do cost extra and a full list relating to your trip can be found with your final documents (or under the optionals heading of your tour online) to assist with trip budgeting. Optionals can be purchased through your tour manager when you’re on the trip. Payment for these is cash only in Europe (no credit cards) while cash and credit cards will be accepted in Australia, New Zealand, USA and Canada tours.

Please note: All of Contiki’s optional excursions are owned and operated by third party suppliers. Contiki does not own or operate any of these excursions, but rather has used its buying power to negotiate favorable rates on your behalf with local suppliers and excursion operators.

What We Offer:

Here’s just a sample of where you may find yourself on some of the optional excursions Contiki offers:

  • Crushing through the foam, paddle in hand White Water Rafting in Austria
  • Flying through the breathtaking scenery of the Grand Canyon on a helicopter flight.
  • Sipping Champagne at a sensational Uluru Sunset
  • Hiking on a glacier in pristine wilderness of New Zealand’s South Island.
  • Sipping Sangria and yelling ‘Ole!’ at a Spanish Flamenco Show
  • Taking in some of the best whites in the world at our Rhine Valley Wine Tasting
  • Snorkeling or diving on the Outer Reefs on a Great Barrier Reef Cruise
  • Hot Air Ballooning over the Arizona desert.
  • Kicking up your heals at the Moulin Rouge or Nouvelle Eve Parisian cabarets.

How to Book

Generally a few days into the Tour your Tour Manager will provided you will a full list of the Optional Excursions available on tour and tell you all about them, giving you the opportunity to ask even more questions and get a better idea about what you may like to do – Either way your Tour Manager will organize it all for you.

How to Pay

You can pay optional excursions in Australia, New Zealand and North America using local currency cash or credit cards. On European Tours payments can only be made in local currency cash (no credit cards) and payments are made to your Tour Manager once on tour.

Every Tour Manager has a different style for collecting payment for optional excursions, but like most things on a Contiki Tour, it’s hassle free.

Cruising by night and sightseeing by day gives you the maximum amount of time in each of the fascinating cities this tour visits. Start your cruise of the continents in Athens, Europe then journey to the African shores of Egypt before discovering the treasures of the east in Israel, Asia. Wonders of the past are at your fingertips from the Parthenon in Athens to the Great Pyramids and Sphinx in Alexandria to the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. So many photo opportunities, so many memories….

Full Itinerary:

  1. Depart for Europe

Jet off to the trip of a lifetime awaiting you in Europe!

  2. Arrive Athens

Check-in to your hotel and spend the afternoon getting a sneak peek at Athens, Europe’s oldest city.

Athens is crammed with myth and ancient wonders, and busy with modern, urban soul. With a free time, keep exploring this open-air museum. You could honor the birthplace of drama by climbing around the massive Theatre of Dionysus or get the background on Ancient Greece at the National Archaeological Museum. Otherwise, experience Athens’ urban heart, take off into the streets and find a hole-in-the-wall food joint, where you can try the famous souvalaki

This evening meet your Tour Representative and fellow Contiki travelers.

Start your tour off with a night to remember and get to know your group at an optional dinner in the rustic district of Plaka. Perched on the shady slopes beneath the Acropolis, Plaka is full of traditional tavernas that spill out onto the pavements. Tonight’s festive atmosphere is perfect for toasting the start of the tour.

  3. Cruising to Istanbul

Board our cruise ship bound for Istanbul, settle in to your cabin and watch the sun set over the Aegean this evening. Then kick off the cruise with your new friends in the ship’s nightclub.

  4. Istanbul

Drop anchor in Istanbul, the last stop on the Silk Road and the only city in the world to span two continents. With a day here, there’s plenty of time to get a real feel for this cultural melting pot.

Begin with an optional tour of Istanbul and get an insider’s angle on Istanbul with our Local Guide, who’ll show off the city’s core sites. Cross the Galata Bridge for stunning views, check out Emperor Constantine’s Agia Sophia and then eat at the magnificent Topkapi Palace, former home of the sultans.

Our Rep shows you one of the city’s major draw cards, the stunning Blue Mosque. It’s an amazing building with a series of domes and minarets dominating the skyline, complete with a breathtaking interior of tens of thousands of blue tiles.

After that, we head right into the heart of the city and plunge into several kilometres of shops at the Grand Baazar. It’s an unforgettable shopping experience, where tacky trinkets and authentic treasures are sold side by side. With carpets, jewellery, spices, music, electronics and more, the place is buzzing, so make sure you’ve got your haggling hat on.

Otherwise, live a bit of Istanbul’s daily life. Try your hand at backgammon in a sidewalk cafe and watch the crowds go by as you sip on Turkish coffee. Chill out in a tea garden, or take to the time-honoured tradition of the hamam (steam bath house) and get scrubbed down on heated marble stones.

Tonight, head to Greece’s stunning islands and sail between two continents on the world’s narrowest navigated straight.

  5. Cruise to Mykonos

Mykonos is famous for its blissful beaches and party culture. No matter what you’re after, chances are this island has got it! You’ll soon understand why this happening hub draws people from all walks of life, from jetsetters to backpackers.

Sign up for a trip to the uninhabited island of sacred Delos. It’s one of Greece’s most important archaeological sites, situated right in the centre of the Cyclades.

In your free time, head into Mykonos town and wander through the maze of tiny streets lined by whitewashed cube-shaped houses. Maybe grab a table for lunch in the village and feast on fresh local specialties, like olives, feta and tzatziki dip.

Chill for the afternoon with friends on the island’s world famous beaches and cool off in the azure waters. Before our late-night sailing, there’s time to wrap up the day with a drink at one of Mykonos’ great bars, while watching the sun go down.

  6. Cruising to Israel

There’s a day’s sailing ahead of you, so take advantage of the fantastic facilities available on the ship. Position yourself poolside and make the most of views from the deck or have a go at one of the activities on hand.

  7. Arrive Ashdod for Jerusalem

We arrive in Israel early this morning and head to the ancient town of Jerusalem. A spiritual crossroads, Jerusalem is holy ground for Christians, Jews and Muslims. Added to its labyrinth of old lanes, bustling markets and alleys, the unique mix of cultures and beliefs gives this place its distinct atmosphere.

Get into the spirit of this place as the group checks-out the city’s holy sites. You’ll see the Mount of Olives and the Via Dolorosa, thought to be the last route Jesus took, as well as the iconic, gold-domed Dome of the Rock. Check out the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, and the most important religious shrine for Judaism, the 2000-year-old Wailing Wall.

Experience a slice of the local lifestyle with a traditional lunch at a Kibbutz and then cruise on to one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world, Bethlehem. Here, we’ll visit the oldest working church, the Church of the Nativity, which was built on the spot where Jesus is believed to have been born.

  8. Arrive Port Said for Cairo

Chaotic Cairo keeps a mass of experiences coming at you thick and fast. Leap from one time to another in this intense jumble of ancient and new.

Uncover the Pharaohs’ glory with your Tour Manager in the Egyptian Museum’s amazing collection that includes Tutankhamen’s treasure. Get up close to royal mummies and jewels raided from their tombs.

Later, dive right into the heart of old Cairo with a visit to the ancient Khan El Khalili bazaar with our Local Guide. Smell the spices as you walk through the ancient souk and get pointers on where to go. Back in the 14th century, this place was the center of world trade and today continues to serve up bargains from across the globe, as well as a combination of kitsch souvenirs and real treasures. You could snack on mouth-watering mezzes (plate sized nibbles), Egyptian bread and hummus dip or sip on some shai (tea).

Next stop: the iconic Sphinx and the Pyramids of Giza. They are the only survivors of the 7 ancient wonders of the world and are on the UNESCO World Heritage list. Our Local Guide will crack open the 4600 year old history of these massive monuments, that 20,000-30,000 workers took over 80 years to build.

  9. Cruise to Crete

Relax on board this morning as we make our way to the biggest of the Greek Islands, Crete.

Choose an optional excursion to the Palace of Knossos where our Local Guide will tell you the story of this 4000 year old mythical Minoan Palace where the minotaur (half-man/half-bull) was slain.

  10. Arrival into Athens

After breakfast and a farewell to our hosts, we disembark in Piraeus and head to Syntagma Square, right in the heart of Athens and home to Greece’s parliament, where our tour ends.

For those who are keen to learn more, there’s a chance to step back in time to the birthplace of democracy in an optional activity. Get the run down on the Parthenon and the Acropolis from our Local Guide, as you wander around the famous columns perched above the city sprawl.
